Tigger Thought Action Consequence

Writer's picture: Adrianne BrownAdrianne Brown

"Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God” [for temptation does not originate from God, but from our own flaws]; for God cannot be tempted by [what is] evil, and He Himself tempts no one. But each one is tempted when he is dragged away, enticed and baited [to commit sin] by his own [worldly] desire (lust, passion). Then when the illicit desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin has run its course, it gives birth to death". (James 1:13-15)

Trigger - Thought - Action -Consequence

Our emotions are triggers that can produce all kinds of thoughts. Once a thought is produced, it desires a response -behavior; action. However we respond or behave to what triggers us, sets in motion what the consequence; result/outcome -will be. The aforementioned scripture tells us, in short, that it starts and ends with us. We can control what the outcome will be by how we choose to react to what triggers us. We have the God given ability within us to adjust our behavior in a way that is beneficial to ourselves and others.

No One to Blame

Take note of which emotions trigger your negative thoughts. Understand thoughts remain thoughts until we act on them. I know the negative feelings and thoughts are the ones that shake us. Even then, we have a choice on how we respond. Our minds can be reprogrammed to respond in a way that is beneficial to ourselves and others. The scripture tells us that, "The weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood]. Our weapons are divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying sophisticated arguments and every exalted and proud thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought and purpose captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:4-5). Don't beat yourself up. We may not be able to stop negative emotions but we can control how we address the thoughts that come with them. Don't give up. Take God at His Word. His Word can change your thoughts and change your life. Embrace the process. Connect with a/your Pastor to help you understand God's Word.
